An intrigued photographer traveled thousands of miles across Europe to snap overgrown sites hidden in some of the continent’s darkest corners. James Kerwin’s eerie series has taken him from French verandas covered with leaves and ivy to overgrown sanatoriums in Georgia and orphanages in Belgium.

The 36-year-old also discovered architecture that has been reclaimed by Mother Nature in places such as Ireland, Sweden, Italy, Wales and England. Kerwin, who is based in Norwich, U.K., said that overgrown sites lend themselves to pleasing imagery — which is why he has pursued such wonders since he began photographing abandoned buildings in 2013.
